Death sentence of 8 former marines stopped in Qatar, big relief on appeal of Indian government


Dahra Global Case: Eight former Indian sailors sentenced to death in Qatar got a big relief on Thursday (28 December). The death sentence of all eight people has been stayed on the appeal of the Government of India. The Foreign Ministry said that it had approached the court in Qatar regarding the matter. During the hearing the court reduced the sentence.

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “A copy of the detailed decision is awaited.” Our legal team is in touch with the families of the eight Indians regarding next steps. Ambassadors and officials were present in the court during the hearing.

The ministry further said that we have been standing with the family of eight people from the beginning. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, it would not be right for us to speak too much about it. We have been continuously raising the matter with the Qatar administration and will continue to do so.

Who are the eight Indians?
The eight former Indian Navy personnel have been identified as Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vashishtha, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar.

What is the allegation?
Eight Indians working in Al Dahra Company based in Qatar are accused of allegedly spying. Although officially Qatar has not said anything regarding the allegations.
